Why Study in Poland?

Poland’s rich history creates a vibrant and culturally diverse environment for international students. Despite a challenging past, the country has evolved into a popular destination, offering stunning architecture, unique cuisine, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Located in Central Europe, Poland is ideal for students who want to immerse themselves in European culture while receiving a high-quality education. The country offers programs in a wide range of subjects and follows the Bologna Process, which ensures compatibility with European higher education standards across three levels of study.

Poland’s higher education system includes both publicly funded and privately funded institutions, each offering specialized courses and varying levels of accreditation. Notably, 10 Polish universities rank among the top 1000 in the QS World University Rankings, with the University of Warsaw leading the list.

Poland’s first university, Jagiellonian University, was established in 1364 and is one of the world’s oldest institutions still operating today. It is ranked within the top 500 QS universities. Poland’s institutions are particularly renowned for their programs in visual arts, music, and theatre, as well as their extensive range of technical schools.


Discovering Poland

Poland shares borders with Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Its diverse geography includes stunning features like the Carpathian Mountains and the Sudetes, making it a picturesque place to live and study. With a population of approximately 39 million, Poland is one of Europe’s most populous countries.

Poland’s history remains a defining feature. The country played a significant role during World War II, with many Holocaust memorials and concentration camp sites now serving as historical landmarks. Today, Poland celebrates its cultural and religious diversity, fostering creativity and intellectual growth.


Cost of Studying and Living in Poland

Currency: The Polish zloty (PLN) is the official currency.

Tuition Fees

  • Polish citizens receive free higher education.
  • To study for free, international students must enroll in a course taught in Polish and pass the same entrance exams as Polish students.
  • Otherwise, tuition fees apply:
    • Public universities: PLN 8,539–PLN 16,000 per year.
    • Private universities: Up to PLN 25,300 per year.

While scholarships for international students are limited, some institutions may offer funding. Contact your preferred university for opportunities.

Living Expenses
The cost of living depends on your lifestyle and location. On average, you should budget at least PLN 2,500 per month. Living on campus is generally more affordable than renting a private apartment.

Part-Time Work

  • EU/EEA Students: No work permit required.
  • Non-EU Students: Employers may need to secure a work permit for you.

While part-time jobs can help with living costs, they should not be relied upon to fund your studies.

Health Insurance

  • EU/EEA Students: If you hold an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), you will have the same access to free healthcare as Polish citizens.
  • Non-EU Students: You must purchase health insurance before your trip or upon arrival in Poland. Without insurance, medical expenses can be costly.

Some countries, such as the UK, Sweden, and Slovakia, have agreements with Poland to provide free healthcare to their citizens. Check with your embassy for details.


Student Visas in Poland

EU/EEA Students

  • No visa required.
  • Must apply for a temporary residency permit for the duration of your studies. This can be obtained through the local Voivodeship Office.

Non-EU Students

  • Require a visa to enter Poland.
  • A standard visa is valid for three months. For longer stays, you must apply for a temporary residence permit to cover the length of your studies.

Visa applications are processed through Polish embassies or consulates in your home country.
