Why Study in the Netherlands?
The Netherlands, often referred to as Holland, is a vibrant country in continental Europe with a population of approximately 17.6 million, including a large international community. As a founding member of various international organizations, the Netherlands holds a prominent position globally.
The country is known for being the first to offer English-taught courses, making it an ideal destination for students fluent in English or Dutch. Its welcoming and diverse culture, combined with a reputation for tolerance and open-mindedness, ensures a comfortable environment for international students.
Types of Higher Education Institutions
The Netherlands offers two types of universities:
- Universities of Applied Sciences: Focused on practical, career-oriented courses.
- Research Universities: Offering a broader range of academic disciplines with a focus on research.
Both types award degrees recognized worldwide. Dutch universities are highly regarded globally; 13 are ranked in the QS World University Rankings 2022, with the University of Amsterdam ranking 55th and Delft University of Technology at 57th.
Exploring the Netherlands
The Netherlands is a diverse and well-developed country located in Europe’s Low Countries region. Its mainland provinces are complemented by three special municipalities in the Caribbean: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The Netherlands is also one of the few nations to have a monarchy, led by King Willem-Alexander.
With excellent transportation links to neighboring countries, the Netherlands is a gateway to exploring the rest of Europe. Locally, its picturesque canals, windmills, and tulip fields make it a popular destination for both tourists and international students.
